Bones 02:07
Another blizzard in June Another scorcher in January They say the end is coming soon We can celebrate, it don’t have to be scary Or maybe we’ll move to Neptune And start a life with planetary charm And Earth will look like just another star Some will say that’s the easy way We should stay, lend a hand To those who can’t survive alone But they can come along Bring their friends and their dogs We gotta share the bones We gotta share the load And we’ll dance beneath the comets’ rain And kiss as though we’re not in pain They say laughter’s the best medicine Who cares if that’s insane?

Old brown box showed black and white Same shows most every night One in every home and the dinner’s frozen Maybe one day I can be on your screen Oh my, the Hollywood dream Change my name and move out west California! Sounds so good in a song You know the rest How they string you along New tube now in color bigger screen more channels Got sitcoms, sports, and all the news you can handle Commercial jingles for cola and pringles Tablets to chew on when your tummy tingles Watch it every night right after work Except on Sundays it’s after church Camped out on the couch with the remote control A couple of beers and a popcorn bowl Definition so high we might take flight Screen so flat and sound just right Network, satellite, outer space The luxury earned from winning a race Amen, Apollo Hats off to Houston Relative miracles are just what we’re used to

I fell in love with a DJ Played all my favorite songs How I wish for instant replay I would listen all night long I fell in love with a DJ Such taste what a voice I don't need a face Won my heart had me staying up late Just to hear em speak Best part of my week I fell in love with a DJ And now I never leave my radio I fell in love with a DJ Got nowhere else to go I'm never alone when I hear the show Every song is my best friend I'm deep in love It's more than a habit You know I'd die if I got static I fell in love with a DJ Laid down the tracks to my heart Sounds so good on the freeway Or in headphones in the dark I fell in love with a DJ And now I never leave my radio I fell in love with a DJ Got nowhere else to go

Fireflies 02:54
Just me and the hounds This time around Spit-tooth jaws, soft-soled paws Like moss feet And grass-fed cows howl Near the back plot Storm, coyote, or young love on the run A pasture for pleasure It all stirs em up after a week like this But just me just me Just me and the hounds A quiet weekend is hard to come by sometimes Harder still when all my week days are filled With the things I gotta do to pay my bills And now at last There’s nectar in my glass Screen door, back porch No bugs that bite Just fireflies Hey ain’t that nice Just me and the hounds And the fireflies

Longshot 04:56
Show me something whimsical, Friday afternoon Part-time ritual, southern sunlight, daydream moon Get lost in drawn-out thought Let go for a long shot I think I’m ready for a change Been so long just the same I kinda wanna stay Wanna feel okay with my feet on the ground When I can’t fly I feel so down And it goes round-and-round First day out the hospital, spring coming soon Cut out the obstacles, feel free and ready to move I’ll climb till I reach the top And let go for a long shot I think I’m ready for a change Been so long just the same I kinda wanna stay Wanna feel okay with my feet on the ground When I can’t fly I feel so down And it goes round-and-round

Fall 04:12
Sandcastle poets and middle school know-it-alls Ideas cobbled together like paper dolls Professors waiting in the hall Nothing sudden, slow build Like a bicycle on an Iowa hill Like Humpty Dumpty, or Jack & Jill When you get to the top there’s nothing to do but fall High top sneakers, demon chat rooms Zombie brides and frat boy grooms Cutting cake in a cold tomb “Could really used to throw the ball A face with such a view And friends would always call,” When you get to the top there’s nothing to do but fall Canary cocktails, electric shock Bathroom counter cure-alls Advice and fortunes, confessions regrets Scribbled on the walls When you get to the top there’s nothing to do but fall

I dream away all my precious days Not asleep - but awake in another time and place Fantasize over endless hours About the things I have done and never will with the time I waste My wandering mind like an unmade bed Blankets and sheets tangled up in my head I’m at home for lunch - just out the rest of the time Hey I’m trying my best to clear my mind Try to get Focused like a star at night Quick as the light and sharp as a knife Zoned in and confident Life’s what I want from it close my eyes let the scenes pour in Pictures collide like the ocean shore within Wash away all the noise like a wave Oh but when it lingers on like city haze

Brimstone butterfly, ever-changing till we die Taking turns at the lost arcade When winter comes we hibernate The colors tell us when to wake When the flowers blaze Brimstone butterfly, ever-changing till we die Floating west on the ocean breeze Salty smell of the sea Lured further into deeper dreams Of the first night’s sleep Brimstone butterfly, ever-changing till we die

about

Made in Grinnell, IA in 2018-2019

A PRELUDE OF SORTS:

You’re riding a wave -- on the ocean, across the prairie; a sound wave, a light wave -- between the beginning of time and the end of the world.

You’ve lived life as a rose, and a tiger. You’ve traveled to Earth in the arms of an asteroid. You’ve been rich enough to buy nations, and poor enough to be forgotten. You’ve never seen a Heaven above or Hell below, but have lived them both on earth.

You appreciate that change is reliable. Inevitable. Constant. You know that your wave, like all waves, will decay, burn out, fade away. You know that another wave, and infinite waves to follow, will take its place. They will bud and swell and crest and fall again and again. You know that those waves will exist, but you can only ride your own, and let each present moment magnify and contribute to your being.
